Man carjacked in George Town

Police are investigating a carjacking in George Town in the early hours of Saturday when an armed man forced a driver to take him to Walkers Road before making off with the vehicle.

The car was later found abandoned, but passports, laptops and other items that had been in the vehicle were missing.

According to a statement released by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service on Monday afternoon, a 31-year-old man from Savannah reported to officers that at about 1 a.m. on Saturday he returned alone to his vehicle, which was parked in the Eurocar parking lot on Shedden Road. As he opened the car door, one of two men whom he saw in the car park came up behind him and told him to get in if he did not want to get hurt.

The man told police the carjacker got into the front passenger seat and ordered him to drive. They ended up in the vicinity of Cayman Academy, Walkers Road, where the carjacker ordered the driver out of the vehicle.

“The suspect then robbed him of his wrist watch, wallet and two cellphones. The suspect left the complainant at the scene and drove away in his vehicle in the direction of Boilers Road.

“The vehicle contained two laptop computers, other electronic items, four passports, two of the passports (Caymanian and British) belong to the complainant and the other two for his wife and son, respectively,” police said in the statement.

Police said the man told them the suspect, whom he said spoke with a Jamaican accent, had a firearm in his waistband.

He said the suspect was dressed in a black short-sleeved T-shirt and jeans pants, and had short dreadlocks. No shots were fired, and no one was injured, police said.

Later on Saturday, the vehicle was recovered by police on School Road, George Town, with the keys in the ignition. Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have information that could assist the police with their investigation, is asked to contact DC Taylor at 949-4222, or the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777, or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).
