Sunset Sixes took place on Sunday in sun drenched conditions at the Camana Bay International School for the seventh time and local recruitment firm CML regained the trophy they last won in 2010.
The annual event was the usual fun mix of football and social gatherings with around 160 footballers playing through the long day of six-a-side competition.
Local bar Fidel Murphy’s provided a BBQ and refreshments to keep the players and spectators satisfied throughout the day that started at 11 a.m.
Sunset Football Club hosts the event to boost funds for the growing youth program which is a fundamental part of the club.
The Sunday morning program has 160 registered kids aged from 5 to 10 and Under-12, U-13, U-15 and U-17 boys’ teams and an U-15 girls’ team.
It was great to see some of the youths from the various programs enjoying the day including David Pitcairn, Matthew Lloyd Hickey, Tye Heiss and Freddie Marsh.
RSM Cayman, Island Heritage, PWC, George Town Rum Runners, KMPG, UBS, The Unknowns and Dominion Devils 1 all had their moments but came up just short before the semifinals. In the plate semifinals, Dominion Devils 2 beat the 16th Team and Dart beat Casanova’s.
Dart, on home turf, led by Karl Noble, proved too strong for the Devils in the final.
The semis of the Sunset Cup saw Sandlot beat a strong Maples team on penalties, whilst ZolfoCooper suffered a similar fate against CML in the other.
Maples, led by Theron Wood and Tom Chipchase – and ZolfoCooper by Kev Guirey and Iain Gow – had both looked like potential winners but did not quite accomplish that.
The tense final could have gone either way, with Justin Pierre and Abijah Rivers a constant threat for Sandlot.
But CML, helped by the impressive James Cooper, sealed it on penalties thanks to saves from their top stopper Felix Manzanares.
Captain Neil Randell said, “It was a great effort from a team who hadn’t played together before.
“We turned out to be really well balanced and to do it all without conceding a goal is a great achievement.
“The tournament was well organized by Sunset and we’re looking forward to defending the title next year.”
Sunset’s Andy Bellfield said, “The club would like to thank all players from Sunday, spectators and all others involved in making the day what it was.”
