Stingray Swim Club members will take to the pool at the Lions Aquatic Center for another sponsored swim next month.
The Second Annual Big Swim is on Friday Oct. 10 at 5 p.m. to raise funds for the club’s upcoming season. The Stingrays will be swimming hard and have just two hours to complete 100 laps (200 lengths) which is 5,000 meters.
They hope to raise $25,000 which, for a small club with age ranging from 6 to 21 is a lofty goal. But they are banking on a strong response.
Swimming is one of the most intense sports, with training taking place year round. The commitment and discipline that it takes to do well is incredible and it is the norm worldwide for swimmers as young as 12 years old to train for 10 hours a week, plus dryland fitness.
Stingrays are hopeful that the community will once again support them.
To encourage 100 percent participation in this event a number of great prizes have been organized, such as for most money raised, for first to finish and for most number of pledges.
Funds raised will go towards a discretionary membership program offering free memberships for reasons of social or economic hardship, a second coach to enable the young graduates of the Government Learn to Swim Program to continue to swim to a higher level and to offset the costs of team travel to overseas meets.
Club President Amanda Roberts said, “Please come out and join us and support these young athletes.” There will be music, food and a huge amount of team spirit and camaraderie going on and friends, family and supporters are all encouraged to be there and encourage the athletes.
