Online poll: Radio the choice for morning drives

More than three-quarters of the 493 respondents to last week’s caymancompass.com online poll said they listen to the radio on their drive into work in the mornings.

The largest segment of respondents – 252 people, or 51.1 percent – said they listen to music from a radio station when driving to work.

“Three stations playing gospel music help provide perspective for the day, although sometimes silence does that as well,” said one person.

“Typically going back and forth between 106.1 and 96.5 to avoid commercials,” said someone else.

“I listen to Love 103 for Christian spiritual messages and songs,” said another person. “It makes the day begin with happiness and a great feeling of peace.”

An additional 120 people – 24.4 percent – said they listen to radio talk shows on their drive into work.

“Rooster 101 live,” said one person.

“A lot of people listen to and call into the three talk shows, namely, Rooster, For Your Record and Radio Cayman,” said someone else. “We don’t know what E&Y were thinking about when they recommended selling Radio Cayman to a private entity. No way!”

Fifty-one people – 10.4 percent – said they listen to nothing on the way to work.

“I never turn my radio on,” said the only person who gave that answer to leave a comment.

Another 48 people – 9.7 percent – said they listened to music from a personal device or CD.

“Mostly I just listen to CDs because I can’t bear the general ignorance of talk radio,” said one person.

“Talk radio puts me in a bad mood for the day,” said someone else.

“Barefoot Man,” said another person.

Nine people – 1.8 percent – said they listen to audio books when driving to work and another 13 people – 2.6 percent – responded “other” to the question.

“Motivational CDs,” said two people.

“I switch between the talk shows and my religious CDs,” said someone else.

“A combination,” said one person. “It depends on the topic of the talk show, then definitely music.”

“It used to be the radio, but the staggering amount of chatter from the show hosts and the upbeat party music is not what I need that time of day,” said another respondent. “More frequently now I use the drive to meditate, focusing on my breathing in silence.”

“Music, news and weather is what I will listen to,” said one respondent. “Talk shows? Oh no. People like to hear their voices on talk shows too much. Get united and help put this island right. All you can hear on the talk show is what others should do and what help they need.”

“Early morning bird song,” commented another person.

“I walk into work,” said someone else.

“I don’t drive into work anymore,” echoed a different person.

Two people used the question to make statements about the George Town Landfill.

“I’m listening to the smell of the dump,” said one person. “The sound of Ozzie, doing nothing about the dump,” said someone else.
