The Cayman Islands Postal Service released a set of stamps on Friday to commemorate the islands’ participation at the Commonwealth Games.
The seven stamps represent each of the sports in which the Cayman Islands competed during the Games in Glasgow, Scotland earlier this year.
The 20¢ stamp features a cyclist, the 25¢ a swimmer, the 75¢ a boxer, the 80¢ an athlete playing squash, the $1 a member of the Shooting Club, the $1.60 a gymnast and the $2 an athlete throwing a javelin. The first day cover contains all seven stamps, and features Michele Smith, Cayman’s flag-bearer at this year’s opening ceremony.
This year’s contingent was the largest Cayman has sent to the Commonwealth Games, with 28 athletes taking part.
Assistant Postmaster General for Marketing Tara Bush apologized for the delay in releasing the stamps. The Games were held from July 23 to August 3. “Nevertheless, we are hoping that our collectors and the sporting community will be interested in this seven stamp series, which commemorates the Commonwealth Games,” she said.
Members of the public are invited to meet athletes who competed in the Games at the Airport Port Office on Saturday, October 11, from 9-11 a.m., and to get the first day covers signed. The postal service will also be celebrating World Post Day, which includes a Santa writing program and 2015 Christmas Stamp Competition.
