Local jet ski racing continues to excel on the international stage.
The Cayman Islands Watercraft Association commends Gary “GJ” Whittaker on his top-10 finishes at the 2014 International Jet Sports Boating Association World Finals. The competition, which completed its 33rd year, took place in Lake Havasu, Arizona this month and is invitation-only, attracting hundreds of the world’s best riders. Whittaker placed fourth overall in the Expert Limited Runabout class and sixth in the Novice Limited Runabout class. While he was not completely satisfied with his performance, he is already in preparation for the 2015 event.
Whittaker was the only rider to represent Cayman at this year’s event. In 2013, the association sent a contingent of riders. Local riders have a proud history of excelling at the competition, as Jordan ‘JJ’ McLean claimed a world title in 2011 and two years ago he placed in the top 10 for the Expert Limited and Pro-Am Limited segments. Roshad Goff placed first overall in the Amateur Stock class and fourth in the Pro Stock division at the 2012 competition.
The world finals represented the second international meet of the year for Whittaker. Back in April, he competed in Daytona Beach, Florida at the P1 AquaX USA Championship season opener. Racing for the Deans Team crew, with additional sponsorship from RIVA Racing, Whittaker finished fifth with 41 points in the 300 class atop a new Yamaha FX SVHO.
