The Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon and Kids Fun Run are coming up on Dec. 7 and organizers are once again encouraging kids to register and take part.
With the training log that the event provides, kids can work towards completing their own marathon and win a prize in the process. In 2012, organizers introduced a marathon log that kids can use to keep a record of their activity leading up to the Kids Fun Run. The goal is to have completed a full marathon (26.2 miles) at the end of the Kids Fun Run in December.
The first 25.5 miles of the marathon can be achieved through running, walking, swimming and hiking, and kids can have their parents, physical education teacher or another adult sign their log verifying that they have completed each mile. After completing the 0.7 mile Kids Fun Run and crossing the finish line, successful participants can boast that they have officially completed a marathon.
Last year, there were about 30 children that completed the running log – with race director Rhonda Kelly saying the kids were motivated to stay fit.
“The running log makes the kids fun run more than just a one-off event,” Kelly said. “Giving children a reason to do a little bit each day or week is a great way to make fitness and activity a part of their lives, something every parent wants for their child.”
Children who complete the running log will be eligible to go into a draw for some great prizes from the run’s sponsor, Milo. The logs can be dropped off when kids pick up their race packets the day before the race, Dec. 6, at the Westin Resort from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kelly said kids have plenty of incentives to complete the race.
“This race was originally started in 2007 with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, who recognized the importance of getting our kids healthy, and we are grateful for their continued funding over the years. Milo came on board shortly after and we are so pleased that they understand the vision for the Kids Fun Run, and we’re excited about the extra incentives that they are giving our kids – which we hope will push them to get involved.
“Their participation significantly enhances both the event and the kids’ race experience, and we want to thank MILO distributor Jacques Scott for their ongoing support of this great activity for our children.”
The Kids Fun Run is open to primary school children ages 5 to 11. Registration for up to 500 students is free, and students are encouraged to register online at CaymanIslandsMarathon.com. Kids registration includes a runners bib, T-shirt and a Milo bag.
The race begins at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue, and kids will run just over a half a mile to the finish line at Breezes by the Bay Restaurant where they will receive medals and be able to sample tasty MILO products.
Registration for the 2014 Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, Half Marathon, Team Relay and Kids Fun Run is open online. Walk-in registration can also be done at the Kelly Holding office.
