Ruggers tackle quarterfinals

The Cayman Islands started well at a top regional rugby competition. 

Cayman’s national men’s and women’s 7s teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the North American and Caribbean Rugby Union 7s Championships in Mexico City, Mexico.  

On Thursday, the ladies beat Jamaica, 15-12, before losing in the semifinals to Trinidad and Tobago, 20-5. The men’s team lost to Guyana, 31-5. Both Cayman teams went on to play consolation games Thursday evening to determine their final rankings. 

The local men won one of their three matches during group play. Cayman beat St. Vincent, 56-14, before losing to Guyana, 38-12, and Mexico, 35-0, to finish third in Pool C with a 1-2 record.  

The ladies, meanwhile, had two victories in three games and finished second in Pool B with a 2-1 mark. Cayman’s women beat St. Lucia, 31-7, and crushed Turks and Caicos, 38-0, before losing to Trinidad, 19-14. 

Representing Cayman on the men’s side are Alex Pineau, Angel Hawkins, David Terry, Edward Westin, Joel Clark, Justin Wight, Keswick Wright, Kramer Bell, Mark Soto, Paul Westin and Taylor Wight.  

The ladies are Avery-Ann Rankine, Cassianne Lawrence, Chrishaunna Trowers, Ciara Henry, Jenna Richards, Jodie McTaggart, Larissa Johnson, Marline Williams, Meylys Swaby, Shenel Gall, Tracey Seymour and Yasmin James.
