Manchester United plan to sell their record buy Angel Di Maria this summer and renew their interest in signing Welshman Gareth Bale.
Di Maria has not shown the form which impressed United when he was a Real Madrid Galactico. In fact, he has been a total flop.
Di Maria and his family have not settled in Manchester and the 27-year-old Argentinian admits he wants a return to his former club. That means a fresh bid by United for Madrid’s Bale who will have to pay considerably more than their club record fee of $75 million which brought Di Maria to Old Trafford last summer.
But Bale is insisting he is happy in Madrid and the former Tottenham star says he has no intention of returning to the Premiership.
United boss Louis van Gaal is desperate to off-load Di Maria who has been substituted in the last two games.
United are prepared to cut their losses on the midfielder and if he does not return to Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain are still keen on signing the player they wanted last year.
Besides Bale, van Gaal still wants defensive targets, Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch winger Memphis Depay.
Van Gaal’s lack of defensive options worsened after Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans was banned for six games starting with Monday’s FA Cup sixth round clash against Arsenal after he lost his appeal for spitting at Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse during the midweek win at Newcastle.
