Runners and walkers who want to take to the road on the holiday on Monday can get some exercise and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time.
The Cayman Heart Fund’s annual Discovery Day 5K takes place on May 18. This year, organizers say, all proceeds are going to the Health Services Authority to help with the purchase of a new ambulance.
Stephen Duval, Emergency Medical Services director with the Health Services Authority, said, “Having a robust fleet of vehicles and building capacity for the future is something we have to plan for, so partnering with the Cayman Heart Fund is a perfect relationship.”
Cayman Heart Fund Board member Dr. Bella Beraha explained the importance of the purchase of a new ambulance for the hospital service: “Time is of the essence and outcomes are greatly changed depending on how quickly medical professionals respond.”
The family event is open to people of all abilities. It starts at 6:30 a.m. for walkers and 7 a.m. for runners by the Cayman National Bank building in Camana Bay and loops twice around the Camana Bay Town Centre. This is a timed event and participants are asked to arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to collect their timing chips.
Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for children and includes T-shirts for the first 250 registrants, snacks and prizes. Registration is now open at www.caymanactive.com. In-person registration takes place on Saturday, May 16, outside the Discovery Centre at Camana Bay.
