Sunset Football Club’s annual fundraiser is guaranteed to be well attended because the star guest is former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan.
Sunset’s main social and fundraising event for this year will be a weekend with the legend on June 20 and 21.
Keegan will be Sunset’s guest on June 20 at Margaritaville to talk about his eventful life and career, which included playing for Scunthorpe, Liverpool, Hamburg, Newcastle, Southampton and England, and managing Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester City and England. He will answer questions from the audience.
He will also sign autographs, have photos taken and mingle with guests throughout the evening.
Sunset will be raffling and auctioning off some sporting memorabilia like signed shirts, photos and books.
It will be an informal evening and everyone will have the opportunity to meet Keegan. The ticket price is $75, including a buffet meal.
Keegan said he is looking forward to his first visit to Cayman with his wife Jean.
The following day Sunset will organize the Kevin Keegan Golf Day at the North Sound Club, which will be a two-person scramble event with prizes and food after.
Keegan will play, and he will also be around before and after the event to socialize with players and present prizes.
The cost is $100 for golf club members or $150 for non-members. In previous years, Sunset has hosted footballers Peter Shilton, Jack Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Bryan Robson and Kenny Dalglish and boxer Frank Bruno, and on each occasion the events have been sold out. Based on Keegan’s popularity, Sunset expect another massive turnout.
Organizer Neil Purton said there is a lot of interest and excitement surrounding the event, particularly from local Newcastle fans. “I am told he is one of the best speakers and is very entertaining,” Purton said. “The Geordies are by far the most excited.”
Various Keegan paintings, photos and shirts will be auctioned. They include a signed Bob Paisley display, Tottenham shirt signed by 18 of the 2015 League Cup final squad including Harry Kane, an England training shirt from when Keegan was manager signed by 31 of the squad and coaching staff, and a Newcastle United photo signed by Bobby Robson, Bob Moncur and Peter Beardsley that Keegan will sign.
“We hope to raise over $10,000 which will go towards developing the club,” said Purton. “We have a strong youth program for 5-11 year olds [boys and girls], five boys youth teams, U-16 girls, ladies, men’s and masters teams. The funds will help with funding our youth football including trips overseas for the kids.”
