Football referees will stage another 6-a-side tournament next week.
It is on July 6 and begins at 9 a.m. at the TE McField Annex. This is the third annual tournament the referees are staging. Last year, there was a low turnout as the World Cup was on and only 10 teams participated. Young Boyz of Bodden Town defeated Haskel 45 in the final.
The previous year, 16 teams took part. George Town were crowned champions after defeating Young Boyz 2-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
“Both events were thoroughly enjoyed by all and several players [with] teams wishing that we could host the event more often,” said organizer William Pettit.
“It was initially developed as a fund raising effort. We saw a need to fill a part of the off-season and thought [what] better way than to host a tournament as football is obviously our passion.”
They are hoping for at least another 16 teams this year but the maximum would be 20 to 24 teams. Some referees played in the previous two tournaments as part of different teams. This year, they also plan to have a referees’ team in the tournament.
Pettit thanked the many sponsors, including the Dept. of Sports, Seaboard Marine, CI Brewery, Dart, Foster’s Food Fair, Sports Supply, JN Money Services and Jacques Scott.
Pettit added, “There will be drinks on sale and special prizes during the day, so it will be a great family fun day,. All are invited to come out and enjoy.”
