Rooney returns to strike fear, and De Gea likely to stay put

Wayne Rooney was frustrated at being used in midfield last season but has been assured Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal will return him to his favored striker’s role next season.

The United captain is relieved to be the main striker again and will not have to worry about midfield duties again. Van Gaal intends to use a 4-3-3 formation with Rooney the central striker, flanked by two forwards.

With the arrival of world-class midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, United want Rooney to go back to his predatory ways and terrorizing defenses. United open their Premier League campaign against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Aug. 8.

Van Gaal hopes to still have David de Gea in goal for United after his much vaunted move to Real Madrid stalled because the Spanish giants have made Keylor Navas their top keeper next season and brought back Kiko Casilla from Espanyol as the reserve keeper.
