One of the most accomplished martial arts exponents in New York will be conducting two seminars at the recently opened tae kwon do gym in George Town on Saturday.
The K-Fit TKD, just off Shedden Road near the Cotton Club, has invited Sensei Nardu Debrah, a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie.
Debrah is a former professional mixed martial arts competitor and was a “Ring of Combat” champion. He is also an instructor in Universal Defense System under Sifu Ralph Mitchell.
Debrah also recorded numerous wins in the North American Grappling Association, Grapplers Quest and the U.S. Chinese Kuoshu Federation.
He now runs a successful martial arts school in the Big Apple.
He was invited to Cayman by Master Steve Graham, chief instructor at K-Fit TKD, who is a 7th degree black belt in various styles of tae kwon do and Korean karate.
Saturday’s seminar is in two parts. From 10 a.m. to noon is Brazilian jiu jitsu, and students do not have to wear a gi. It will cover escapes, chain submissions and transitions. The seminar from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will concentrate on striking, Muay Thai boxing, Savate, boxing and mixed martial arts. Cost for one seminar is $25, or $40 for both.
“We at K-Fit are excited to be able to host this weekend’s MMA seminars,” Graham said, “We are open to all martial arts, not just the ones taught here at the center.
“Martial arts, whatever format it takes, is for developing the individual person and becomes a lifestyle that carries through from a young age to adulthood. So at K-Fit we are developing body, mind and spirit to give the student life skills for everyday life situations, not just for the dojang/dojo.”
Students who enjoy K-Fit classes include Jordan McLaughlin, Derek Pascal, Jason Smith and John Leonard.
David Reid, one of the K-Fit members, is a black belt. He said, “We have respect for all martial arts, and believe it’s valuable to expose our members to the various different forms.
“Sensei Nardu has such a wide variety of experience in martial arts, we are excited about what he will be able to offer to our members and others through the seminars.”
Reid added that many of the K-Fit members are aspiring to compete at an international level, “and Sensei Nardu has accomplished that in many individual martial arts as well as MMA.”
Reid believes he will be an inspiration to anyone who attends his seminars to continue training in martial arts, “which we believe represents a very positive and healthy lifestyle.”
