U-15 national football team claims third in Caribbean Football Championships

The Cayman Islands Under-15 national football team claimed third place in the 2015 Caribbean Football Union U-15 Championships on Sunday.

After the match against St. Lucia in St. Maarten ended 1-1, there was an enthralling 5-4 sudden death penalty shootout.

Kareem Foster, Cayman’s top scorer in the tournament, opened the scoring in the eighth minute but St. Lucia levelled just before the halftime break.

Both teams searched for the winner in an exciting second half but to no avail, so it went to penalties.

Cayman’s standout goalkeeper Albertini Holness was the day’s hero as he saved the first penalty and scored the deciding penalty in sudden death. His exploits earned him the Man of the Match award.

Curacao were crowned U-15 champions after defeating the Dominican Republic 4-2 in the final game played after the third place match.

The team returns to Cayman on Tuesday at 4:20 p.m. on Cayman Airways from Cuba and anyone wishing to welcome them back is encouraged to be there.
