Police have named the cyclist killed on Friday night as Rhonda Marie Ebanks Azan.
According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Ms. Ebanks Azan, 61, had been cycling on Shamrock Road, near Matilda Drive, in the direction of George Town, around 6.45 p.m. when she was involved in a collision with a Ford F250 truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Both the driver and the cyclist were taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where Ms. Ebanks Azan was pronounced dead. Police said the driver was released from hospital a short time after being admitted. He was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and bailed.
The road was closed throughout Friday night and reopened this morning.
A 61-year-old female cyclist was killed Friday night after a collision with a car on Shamrock Road.
The 54-year-old male driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, police said.
The accident happened around 6.45 p.m. near Savannah Primary School.
The cyclist passed away at the Cayman Islands Hospital.
Police said Shamrock Road would be closed throughout the
night from the Countryside Shopping Village to Spotts/Newlands Road. Motorists
will be diverted onto the East/West Arterial.
