One of the Caribbean’s biggest annual kitesurfing events, the Rock International Open, returns to Grand Cayman in January.
The Rock International Open will be held at Barkers National Park in West Bay, making the most of the idyllic conditions and picture-perfect beaches. Last year, more than 200 spectators flocked to the beach to catch the thrilling action of the final.
Next year, the event will be held over the Heroes Day weekend on Jan. 22-25. Cayman will welcome back some the world’s top athletes in the sport, including defending champions Chris Bobryk and Hope Levin.
Also due to return are the lively Eric Riestra, Alex Fox and one of kitesurfing’s legendary veterans, Billy Parker.
Registration is now open to all local and international kitesurfers from amateurs to professionals, males, females and juniors, with three disciplines to suit all skill levels, including freestyle, big air and a twin tip race. Open registration allows anyone to enter and compete for a share of the $12,000 prize money.
The registration fee of $150 includes entry into all three disciplines, or participants can chose individual events for $75.
All entrants will receive TRIO event shirts as well as entry into the athletes dinners and evening events.
The competition aims to raise the profile of Grand Cayman for sports tourism, while raising money for and supporting local athletes and businesses.
