Legends Tennis returns in the new year with six former world-class players competing, the biggest name being Anna Kournikova.
Tennis Hall of Fame legends join Grand Slam champions, former World No. 1s and celebrity guests on the Courts at Camana Bay from Feb. 5-6.
Joining Kournikova are Andy Roddick, Ashley Harkleroad, Jim Courier, Mansour Bahrami and Mark Philippoussis in the men’s singles, mixed doubles and men’s doubles for two nights of exhibition tennis at Festival Green.
“I’m super excited to return to the Cayman Islands and participate in the Legends tennis event,” said Kournikova, who partnered Sir Richard Branson in February.
“I had an amazing time and I can’t wait to get back on the court,” she said. “It’s a great feeling for me to be able to come back and help to promote the game of tennis and encourage children to be healthy and active.”
The 34-year-old Russian is a former world No. 1 doubles player. She won the Australian open in 1999 and 2002, playing both tournaments with Martina Hingis.
Kournikova was also a top 10 singles player, reaching a No. 8 ranking in 2000. Since retiring from tennis, she’s appeared as a trainer on The Biggest Loser and served as a global ambassador for Population Services International’s Five & Alive program, addressing health crises facing children.
Stadium seating will be offered for around 1,500 people. With seating around three sides of the court and a breeze from the Caribbean Sea, the Legends Tennis site competes as one of the sport’s most scenic stadiums in the world.
“I am extremely excited to receive this event invitation,” Philippoussis said, who competed here a few years ago.
Roddick said, “I am really looking forward to year two of Legends, Grand Cayman. The beautiful island, warm weather, and amazing hospitality combine for an incredible event, and a personal favorite on my calendar each year.”
Courier has won this event twice before and lost in a final to Stefan Edberg. “I am thrilled to be coming back to Legends in Grand Cayman,” Courier said. “I always have such a lovely time on the island and this year’s field should make for an exciting event.”
