Saints divine against Legends

The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation National League is generating plenty of interest with some terrific action in each game.

It all continues on Tuesday with two games at the First Baptist Church gym. In the women’s division, the Survivors will play the Ladybugs at 7:30 p.m., Asian Retail will face Exotic at 8:30 p.m.

At the same venue, on Wednesday the men’s games will start with ALT’s Grills playing Chemistry at 7:30 p.m. and the FBC Saints facing the Androgroup Jeriatrics at 8:30 p.m. Both genders play simultaneously on Saturdays at the ARC at Camana Bay.

In last week’s men’s action, the FBC Saints faced the Legends in a matchup that lasted three sets.

The Legends surprised everyone, jumping out to take the first set 25-17. But the Saints marched back in the second set, winning it 25-15 and also won the final set 15-6 to secure the match.

The FBC Saints were lead by Troy Alleyne who had five kills, four digs and a service ace in the match and was assisted by Ricky Ducent who was flying high with three kills, three digs and a service ace.

The Legends were always competitive and were lead by Nimrod Morata who had five kills and a service ace.

Defensively it was Jimmy Lagunzad with five big digs that helped keep the Legends in the game. Overall the action was great to watch as the setters on both teams spread the ball to give all players an opportunity to get in on the scoring.

In the second game it was a grudge match for the Androgroup Jeriatrics who faced ALT’s Grills, having lost to the Grills in two straight sets earlier in the season.

There was tremendous action and acrobatic feats of athleticism. On several occasions, sure kills resulted in a big block or a miraculous dig.

It was however the high velocity jump serves by the Androgroup Jeriatrics that prevailed as Allen Grunert, Martin Bodden, Richard Campbell and Nchane Jere combined to score 12 service aces in addition to several tough serves that placed tremendous pressure on the opposition.

Bodden lead the Jeriatrics with five acrobatic kills that proved his ability to hit with both his left and right hand. Grunert and Campbell also added three kills each.

For ALT’s Grills, Joebert Macasling lead with three kills and three huge blocks. Sebastien Mirbel added two kills and a block along with Kurt Randolf’s two blocks and a kill.

The Androgroup Jeriatrics were electric in this match, winning in two sets 25-12 and 25-18 and now top the standings
