It’s time again for feet to beat the street! The Cayman Islands Marathon takes place on Sunday, and just in case you thought it was too late for you to sign up – fear not! You can register up to the day before the race.
The marathon started fairly small a number of years ago, but has now grown to a serious contender on the international marathon circuit. After all, there aren’t many places in the world that appeal to runners in winter.
The race begins in George Town on Harbour Drive and takes participants down leafy green-lined roads with views of the Caribbean Sea as they head to Old Prospect Road and Prospect Point, the turnaround spot. One round trip is the half-marathon, and two adds up to the magic 26.2-mile number.
Even if you do not think you can handle the half-marathon, you can sign up for a four-person relay team.
Still shivering in your sneakers? Then come along and just cheer for people as they run the course. Many runners will tell you that it’s the support from the crowd and the water stations that keeps them going when their legs threaten to cease up.
Pile up on your carbs the day before at Breezes By The Bay Restaurant on Harbour Drive. The Pasta Party event on Saturday is included in the registration fee and there are two seatings, at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Guest tickets are available at $16 each if space is available.
Breezes will also be serving a big slap-up breakfast immediately after the marathon, transforming the restaurant from its role as a water and juice station in the early morning. Items include Escovitch fried fish, breakfast poutine, granola fruit muesli, the “ALL” American and lots of open-face toasties.
