Kirk Freeport takes team event
Former PGA Championship winner Rich Beem shot six-under-par over 36 holes to triumph at the Cayman Islands Golf Invitational on Saturday.
Beem’s guidance also helped his team, Kirk Freeport, to win the team competition at the pro-am event at the North Sound Club.
In a star-packed field that also included former world number one David Duval and PGA tour pros Brian Davis and Peter Hanson, Beem led the way. The 45-year-old shot one-under-par 70 on the opening day, following up with a five-under-par 66 on Saturday morning to win by three shots.
His nearest rivals were Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez and Brit Greg Owen who tied for second with 139 over the two days.
“This year’s tournament was a huge success. There was great golf played by both the professional and amateur players, and several teams had a chance to win,” said Josh Shepard, director of golf at the North Sound Club.
“The professionals that joined us are not only accomplished players and major tournament winners, they are great people that made the week enjoyable for the sponsors, players and spectators.”
The event was hosted by Marcello Santi, a former European tour player who lives on island and was able to arrange for the professional golfers to take part.
Chris Kirkconnell, who was part of the winning team from Kirk Freeport, said it had been a humbling and educational experience to play with Beem.
Mr. Kirkconnell, who shot 87 over 18 holes on Friday, said Beem was an affable partner, giving tips to the amateurs on the way round.
“Some of the shots that the pros play are difficult to comprehend. It is incredible how close they are able to get to the pin from so far away.
“The great thing is that the pros that come down for this tournament are not just good players, they are great guys. Rich Beem is a great personality and everybody really enjoyed playing with him.”
Daniel Kirkconnell, Philip Wight and Serge Barube were also part of the Kirk Freeport team. Red Sail Sports finished second in the team event, and Elian was third.
