Top talent come out for Cayman Open

Tennis players are in the midst of the 10th annual PwC Cayman Open, which opened on Jan. 14 and continues until Saturday.

As well as attracting some of Cayman’s top tennis talent, three overseas players took part in the Open Division. This year’s tournament, in which 63 players are taking part, also has 35-and-over and 50-and-over divisions.

The Open Divisions of the men’s and ladies division was played Jan. 14-17.

“The event has been fantastic and the level of play has been very good as well,” said Rob Seward, manager of the Cayman Islands Tennis Club.

In the men’s final, Dana Parziale, the No. 1 seed and pro from The Ritz-Carlton defeated Karl Hale, a former Davis Cup player from Jamaica and current tournament director of Canada’s biggest tournament. The score was 6-4, 6-4.

The women’s final showcased Cayman No. 1 Jade Wilkinson, who defeated Sharon Runk of the U.S., 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Dana Parziale and Neal Fernandez, another Ritz-Carlton pro, beat Callum Theaker and Kevin Fawcett in the men’s open doubles, and Irena Blocher and Jade Wilkinson defeated visitors Sharon Runk and Jacqui Sher 6-4, 6-2 in the women’s doubles final.

In the mixed doubles finals, Dana Parziale and Irena Blocher defeated Karl Hale and Sharon Runk.

The men’s 35’s final will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the tennis club. The men’s 50’s final was scheduled to be played at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
