Big Dig a hit, rain or shine

The Big Dig turned out to be a smashing volleyball tournament at Seven Mile Beach on Jan. 17.

In the finals, How I Set Your Mother battled it out with Hot Chocolate. Although the result was 3-2, in a sporting gesture, the teams split the winning prize of $500 cash because of the interruption of play due to a downpour.

The semifinalists slogged through the rainy and overcast conditions, with Balls in Yo Face edging out The Shots to win third and fourth place, respectively.

The tournament, sponsored by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Association and Epic Day Entertainment, featured 13 coed teams and plenty of prizes and giveaways. The teams got to work in the hot sun, and some even dressed up for the occasion to show off their “fashion” sense as well as their athletic skills on the volleyball court.

The rules were simple: all teams were allowed only one national player on court and had to have a minimum of one woman on court at all times. The games were kept short to 15 quick points.

The event drew both current and previous national players, including Richard Campbell, Olney Thompson, Taylor Burrowes, Javid Ali, Jessica Wolfenden and Ethan Manderson.
