“The boat trip is always a sellout and a good fundraiser for us,” said Paula Whythe of One Dog at a Time. “The trip is relaxing and reminds you of the beauty in Cayman.”

One Dog at a Time

The animal rescue group was set up in 2012 with the aim of rescuing strays, as well as animals that would otherwise be euthanized at the Department of Agriculture. So far this year, the group has rescued 27 dogs, and 22 of them have already been placed in homes on island, or through rescue partners in New York and Toronto.

“Since our inception we have grown in size, and more people are aware of the work we do,” Whythe said. “Our events are popular as they are aimed at different people and change every month. Our target is to raise $1,000 a month. Some events raise more than this, some less, but we have to keep having money coming in to cover the costs. The less money we have, the less dogs we can help.”

It costs $95 for the group to get a dog from the pound, in addition to veterinarian fees. Once dogs are rescued they are sent to live with foster families until a permanent home can be found.
