If you are a stand-up paddleboarding fan, make sure you block off this weekend so you can attend the East End SUP Classic presented by White Sand Water Sports at the Wyndham Reef Resort.
The event will be held Saturday and Sunday, and will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday with an endurance 6-mile distance paddle for a cash prize of $700 for first place in both the women’s and men’s divisions. After the race, there will be a barbecue hosted by the Wyndham Reef Resort, with a bonfire burning into the night. All are welcome to join the party.
The resort is offering great deals on rooms for the weekend, starting at $99, but supplies are limited.
While Saturday’s race is designed for the experienced paddler, Sunday will be geared toward all skill levels and ages, starting at 7 a.m. with a sunrise paddle.
At 8 a.m., there will be an Introduction to Paddleboarding class for all novices or first-time paddlers, as well as Paddle Yoga and Paddle Fit for the more seasoned SUP’er.
There are free boards for use if needed, but board stocks are limited so make sure you request one in advance if you need it. There will be a kids and adults 1-mile race, and a four-person survivor relay race with the winning team receiving $400.
“We have been wanting to host a paddleboard race out in East End for quite some time,” said Alan Correia, operations manager of White Sand Water Sports, “as the paddle community on the island is very active.
“We decided to add a little cash incentive for a few events to get the buzz going and it seemed to work … we have been seeing a lot of interest.
“We also agreed that 100 percent of the registration fees and all event T-shirt sales will go to the National Council of Voluntary Organisations and Special Needs of Cayman. You should do something good when you’ve got a platform,” he said.
