The Cayman Islands Tennis Club hosted the 2018 PwC Junior Tennis Grand Prix #3 last weekend, organized by the Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands.

There was a strong player turnout, with six players in the 10 and Under division, 14 players in the 14 and Under division and eight players in the 18 and Under division. Several newcomers were seen in the 10 and Under division, along with returning players in the 18 and Under who were home from boarding school for the Easter break. This infused some welcome variety into the tournament, with the extra competition being beneficial to the juniors when it came to achieving growth in their skills.

Each age group had a main draw and a consolation draw. Once a player lost their first match from the tournament’s main draw they were automatically entered into the consolation draw, ensuring each player had the chance to play at least two matches.

All players demonstrated great skill and a high level of sportsmanship, observed Tournament Director Ilian Nachev.

In the 18 and Under age group, Harrison Clough, currently at boarding school in Scotland, defeated Lauren Fullerton 6-3, 6-3 to win the title. Alex Claybourn won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a battle with Cayden Stradling for third place. Both players attend boarding school in England. Jake Booker defeated Ricardo Douglas 6-0, 6-0 in the finals of the consolation draw. In an exciting match, Alex Claybourn and Harrison Clough defeated Caden Stradling and Jakub Neveril 8-7 (10-6 in the tiebreaker) in the doubles.

In the 14 and Under division, Zach Jackson defeated Sebastian Bjuroe 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to claim the title, while Willow Wilkinson defeated Grace Beighton 6-3, 7-5 to win the consolation draw. Alex Priestley claimed the victory against his younger opponent, Rafael Wejbora, 6-4, 6-4 to take third place. Albert Berksoy and Rafael Wejbora teamed up to defeat Phin Ellison and Joshua Richardson 8-7 (10-2) in another close-fought doubles match.

Lauren Fullerton had to settle for second in the 18 and Under class.

The 10 and Under division was dominated by Albert Berksoy, who defeated Milana Thompson 6-2, 6-2. Andrew Jacques, playing in his first tournament, was victorious over Alex Linkowski to win third place, 6-4, 6-3. And finally, Gail Jacques defeated Ricardo Reis 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation finals, this being the first tournament for both Gail and Ricardo.

The next tournament will take place at The Courts at The Ritz-Carlton from May 25-27.

Zach Jackson claimed the 14 and Under title.
