The Cayman Islands Flag Football Premier League continued into week 2 of the season on 13 July at the Ed Bush Sports Complex.

The first game featured Maples against Uncle Clem’s Wolves. Wolves came into the game ready to secure their first win for the season with an early touchdown thrown by Wolves QB Jordan Subblefield to key receiver Brett Eden.

Ryan Ebanks successfully completed the extra point conversion along with a field goal shortly after.

Both teams continued the game with a strong defence, Maples with multiple sacks by Michael Swaby, Fabio Gall and Robia McField, and Wolves with a sack by Demetri Chambers and interceptions by Ryan Ebanks and Thomas McField.

Although Maples QB James Stephen was able to find Larue Nixon on offence for their first and only touchdown of the day, the game ended 10-6 in favour of Wolves.

Up next was the HSM Vipers for their first game of the season against RedStripe Wolverines. Wolverines QB Antoinette Lewis was able to push her offence up the field with major catches by Nekita Saintvil and significant runs by Amelia Gillispie. A throw to Gillispie secured the Wolverines the first touchdown of the game.

Vipers QB Lisa Malice looked to Shanelle Frederick for the majority of her completions during this game, but it was the toss to Dionne Whittaker who subsequently threw the pass to Alicia Evans to get the touchdown for the Vipers, extra point conversion caught by Shanelle Frederick. Vipers secured their first win 7-6.

Burger King Panthers then took on the Miller Lite Hellcats. Hellcats demonstrated true focus on offence with major completions from QB Will Preguero, looking to receiver Terry Ballard to meritoriously move the ball up the field.

However, Panthers defence clapped back with sacks from Jamall Dell and Paul Chin and interceptions from Frankie Brathwaite, one of which pushed the Panthers right up to the goal line where Jordan Cacho was able to rush in for the first touchdown of the game. Preguero maintained his focus and was able to then find Theo Edman who ran downfield to secure the touchdown for Hellcats.

Although Hellcats had key tackles from Paul Laidlaw and Nate Narcisse, including a sack from Joseph Tatum, Panthers QB Brendon Malice threw an over the head pass to Chris Bennett to end the game 13-6.

The final game of the night was a close one as Tribe Tattoo Sharks went up against The Greenhouse Lynx. Tyanna Jan continues to be a force as running back for her team, which proved to be helpful, as Lynx defence came out strong with several interceptions from Erica Bosch and Marleena Smith.

On offence for the Lynx, the QB/running back duo Bosch and Denicia Cranston ran the ball for several yards, but it was the key catches by Keisha Solomon that pushed the girls up the field making great gains.

With the game still at 0-0, they made their way into overtime. Jan not only scored the field goal for her team but also caught the game ending interception against Lynx to finish the game 3-0 in favour of Sharks.

The women then took the field under the lights at the Annex Football Field on Monday, 15 July.

First up were Maples Jaguars and HSM Vipers. This game was nail-biting as both teams came out to play hard, while Maples are showing teams why they shouldn’t be underestimated. Erica Burke was the recipient of most of Vipers’ passes from QB Lisa Malice. However, strong defensive tackles from Shanelle Stewart and sacks from Ornella Leahong and Tenecha Senior would prevent Vipers from scoring.

This defensive battle went into overtime where the Vipers managed to secure a touchdown with a rush by Jennifer Cotarelo-Choice. Vipers held their second win for the week 6-0.

Lastly, the RedStripe Wolverines were up against the Tribe Tattoo Sharks. Sharks QB looked to Alison Murphy for several completed passes throughout the game.

Tajae Grey led the Wolverines defence with five tackles preventing Sharks from scoring. Despite crucial stops by Sharks Bianca Hunt, including an interception by Krystle Barrett, this wouldn’t stop Wolverines from moving up the field and scoring the only touchdown of the night with a pass to Nekita Saintvil in the endzone. Wolverines won 6-0.

Week 3 continues this Saturday, 20 July, at the Ed Bush Sports Complex starting at 1pm and again on Monday night at the Timothy McField Football Field at 7:15pm.
