Cayman Airways has cancelled its La Ceiba flights to the Goloson International Airport on Thursday as the Honduras airport continued to maintain its Category 6 safety downgrade, the national carrier has announced.
CAL, in a statement Thursday morning, said the decision to cancel flights was taken despite the airport “assuring Cayman Airways that safety measures were being put in place to facilitate [Thursday’s] flights”.
“As a result of the inability to operate [Thursday’s] jet aircraft to La Ceiba, [Thursday’s] La Ceiba flight KX882, which was scheduled to depart Grand Cayman at 10am, and flight KX883 scheduled to depart La Ceiba at 12:25pm, have been cancelled. Cayman Airways is arranging recovery flights using its Saab 340B+ aircraft, and all affected passengers will be notified directly and rebooked accordingly,” the statement said.
Affected passengers can also call Cayman Airways reservations on (345) 949-2311 or 800-2791-9422 (toll free in Honduras).
“Cayman Airways is currently working with authorities to determine requirements as it relates to PCR testing,” it said.
The national carrier said last week the Goloson International Airport issued an official Notification To Airman (NOTAM), which effectively downgraded “the airport’s operational capabilities to Category 6 with immediate effect, resulting in Cayman Airways not being able to operate its Boeing 737-8 jet aircraft into that airport”.
The Roatan airport was also downgraded to Category 6 until 7 Dec. 2021, CAL added.
The International Civil Aviation Organization requires Category 7 or higher for CAL’s B737-8 fleet to fly into any airport.
