The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation closed out their 2021 season with its ‘BIG little’ Tournament on Saturday, 20 Nov.

The doubles competition, which paired adult and junior players, took place at the courts on Seven Mile Public Beach.

Tammy Kelderman, CIVF beach volleyball director, said the tournament – organised by Heatwave Volleyball Club – was an opportunity for the junior players to gain experience.

“The junior players, who have been training super hard for the last several months, got to have some real-time playing,” Kelderman told the Cayman Compass. “We really want to try and nurture these young players and get them developed.”

Kelderman added that the event offered a transition for junior players in respect to their regular training schedule.

“Not many people will start from indoor sixes and go right to doubles,” she said. “So, it’s very helpful to have some older players that have experience with the beach games [to] come out here and help them develop their beach game.”

Senior player Sandy McCombs and young volleyball prospect Tatum Finlayson were victorious in the finals, defeating Sebastian Mirbel and Tatum’s younger sister, Lucie Finlayson, 21-9.

CIVF expects to hold its next competition in January 2022, beginning with two doubles tournaments, followed by the start of the corporate beach volleyball league in February.
