Maples Group makes management team appointments
Following its biennial review of various global and local management positions, the Maples Group is keeping its global management team largely unchanged except for several appointments in response to retirements.
Peter Stapleton succeeds Nicholas Butcher, who has retired from the firm, as managing partner in Ireland. Michael Gagie (Asia), Richard May (British Virgin Islands), Matthew Gardner (Cayman Islands), Manuela Belmontes and Philip Ireland (Dubai), Nick Evans (Jersey), Heidi de Vries (London) and Johan Terblanche (Luxembourg) all continue as local or regional office managing partners.
Likewise, Aristos Galatopoulos (dispute resolution and insolvency), Scott Macdonald (finance) and Tim Frawley (regulatory) continue as global practice group leaders.
Following the retirements of Edward Miller (corporate) and Jon Fowler (funds), Kieran Walsh and Matthew Gardner will be joint global practice group leaders (corporate) and Michael Richardson takes over as the global practice group leader (funds).
Michael Gagie continues as head of the firm’s BVI law practice, globally.
Among several new local and regional practice group leader appointments, James Eldridge and Caroline Moran will assume the role of joint local practice group leaders for the Cayman Islands dispute resolution and insolvency practice.
The group has 2,300 staff at 16 locations worldwide.
Mourant named ‘Offshore Law Firm of the Year’ by The Lawyer
Mourant has been recognised as one of the world’s leading law firms, winning The Lawyer’s ‘Offshore Law Firm of the Year’ award for the second year in a row.
The firm has now won the title on five occasions, including the inaugural award in 2004.
Mourant’s submission highlighted the successful culmination of the firm’s ambitious five-year strategy, which delivered organic growth, and the launch of Mourant Consulting, a new financial services regulatory consulting business.
Walkers wins ‘Best Law Firm’ and ‘Best Lawyer’ at Captive International awards
Walkers’ Cayman Islands insurance and reinsurance group has been recognised as ‘Best Law Firm’ by Captive International in its annual Cayman Awards, while partner Tony De Quintal has been named ‘Best Lawyer’.
The awards recognise the efforts and achievements of individuals working in or with the captive insurance industry in the Cayman Islands and are based on votes and feedback received from members of the captive insurance industry.
In October, Walkers’ European insurance teams had been named the winner in the Legal Services category of the newly established European Captive Review Awards.
Walkers’ global insurance and reinsurance group advises on the laws of Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Ireland – four key jurisdictions for insurance globally, and specifically the captive insurance market.
RBC Royal Bank, Butterfield win private banking awards
Royal Bank of Canada has been named the Caribbean’s Best Private Bank by Global Finance Magazine for the second consecutive year.
RBC also captured local Best Private Bank awards in The Bahamas and Barbados markets.
In the Cayman Islands, Butterfield took home the award.
The corporate finance publication’s annual Private Bank Awards recognises banks that best serve the specialised needs of high-net-worth individuals as they seek to preserve, enhance and pass on their wealth.
Global Finance’s editorial board selects the winners with input from executives and industry insiders based on submissions, in addition to independent research. This year’s ratings were based on performance from 1 July 2020 through 30 June 2021.
