There has been a 12th death from COVID-19, Public Health officials noted on Thursday.
No further details were provided regarding this person’s age or vaccination status.
It comes as hospitalisations remain low, with just five COVID-19 patients hospitalised at time of reporting, one more than last reported on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, an update from the Ministry of Health and Wellness revealed there are now 284 probable Omicron cases in Cayman, in addition to 44 confirmed cases of the recently-identified strain. The number of probable cases is 86 higher than reported on Wednesday.
A case is ‘probable’ when the results of PCR testing indicate the Omicron variant, by virtue of S-gene dropout which other variants like Delta do not have, but only becomes ‘confirmed’ once the sample has been processed through genome sequencing.
Interim Chief Medical Officer Dr. Autilia Newton reported 68 new cases of COVID-19 in total on Thursday, all from the community. These positives come from 421 PCR tests conducted in total, since the last report.
The results left the number of active cases of COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands at 3,695. The total number of cases recorded since the start of the pandemic stood at 8,943 at the same time.
The total number of people in isolation linked solely to community transmission was 3,550.
The Public Health Department also confirmed that there have been 2,461 total positive lateral flow tests, since the introduction of the lateral flow test programme.
There were five new cases found in the Sister Islands. To date, there have been 135 total cases recorded in the Sister Islands, with 120 having recovered. Out of the total number of cases in the Sister Islands, 74 were fully vaccinated, six were partially vaccinated, and 55 were unvaccinated.
Vaccination clinics reopened on Wednesday, but no further updates regarding these figures have been provided since Christmas Eve.
