Teachers and would-be thespians are about to enjoy a rare opportunity to work with some of theatre’s best educators.
Caystage at the Cayman Drama Society’s Prospect Playhouse is excited to announce that it will be welcoming the Royal Shakespeare Company education team to Cayman in the first week of April. The members are bringing their expertise to local institutions with a Continuous Professional Development and Learning one-day course for primary school teachers. This will be alongside some workshops with individual schools that are studying Shakespeare, and the acting classes at Caystage.
The RSC uses a method of teaching the works of The Bard by taking desks out of the equation and turning the classroom into a rehearsal room. It is the company’s first project in the Caribbean, with Kirsty O’Sullivan, head of training and support at CDS, leading the charge.
“It came about when I was in Stratford-Upon-Avon doing my master’s in Shakespeare and education, and ended up in a training group with one of the RSC’s education team,” O’Sullivan said. “Long story short, I talked them into coming to work with us… It was meant to happen in spring 2020, but was another victim of COVID-19’s wrath, so this has been a long time coming.”
O’Sullivan said that there is still space in the Monday primary school CPDL course, with a place for a teacher from each primary school to attend.
“It is such a unique opportunity that we have been given,” O’Sullivan said. “I really hope people take advantage of this chance – it will be an amazing experience.”
