The iconic blue iguana statue at the entrance of the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park was badly damaged by unknown vandals on Sunday, 27 March.
Luke Harding, operations manager at the Blue Iguana Conservation programme, said in an interview with the Cayman Compass that he was the person who discovered the beheaded statue on Sunday morning.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen such deliberate vandalism [at the park]. It’s sad because that statue is an incredible piece of art and it’s an important symbol. The blue iguana is a national symbol of Cayman,” Harding said.
The 600-pound blue iguana statue was donated to the North Side park by two Wisconsin artists, brother and sister David and Sher Quasius, in 2017.
Harding encouraged anyone with information about the act of vandalism to come forward and speak to park officials or the police.
