It is with deep sorrow that I write you as the Speaker and on behalf of the Representatives of the House of Parliament of the Cayman Islands. We mourn the loss of a former political colleague, Arley James Miller, who was the last surviving Vestryman, of the Assembly of Justices And Vestry.
Most significantly, he was one of the original framers of Cayman Islands’ first written Constitution. The Constitutional framework paved the way for our future at the time.
Based on his dedicated service to these islands and political contributions, he was honoured and duly recognised on National Heroes Day in 2020.
He was [a] pioneer in our political and business landscape and made meaningful contribution to the society and to the peoples of these islands.
We acknowledge there is always a void when persons who serve and commit to the society are no longer with us. From all indications he was a nation builder in his own way.
He was a good supporter of my political thought process and when I had to depend on him he was there with me.
AJ was not an ordinary politician. He had the senses that led him to duck many showdowns, but pick up the mantle to stand and fight when the need arose. He was a great defender when the need arose.
I recall I was taken a beating from a section of the Establishment for my stand against the robbery of gratuities from the tourist sector workers, and he told the meeting “I stand with this young man because he is for the people who can’t stand for their own self and today you fight him, but you going to need him to fight for you too.”
I miss his kind of loyalty when he believed in a cause.
We express sincere condolences to the bereaving family and the parliamentary community of this loyal Caymanian.
Please accept on behalf of the Parliament of the Cayman Islands our heartfelt sympathies.
Speaker of Parliament
