The Cayman Islands will hit the waves off Brevard County, Florida on Sunday, 22 May, with hopes of making history by winning the Thunder in the Cocoa Beach Super Boat Grand Prix.
The powerboat event, which is considered to be one of the biggest races in central Florida, will feature 60 teams from across the globe, including Class 1 racers who can reach speeds of over 175 mph.
The 345 Racing Team, owned by Caymanian Mario Rankin, has recruited Alex Pratt of the US and Miles Jennings of the UK to operate the 42-foot catamaran, powered by twin Mercury Racing 1100 competition engines.
Rankin told the Cayman Compass that having the opportunity to compete in the event is a dream come true, with he and his team racing for nothing less than first place.
“[We are] representing the Cayman Islands in the largest powerboat racing event in the world, with some of the fastest boats on the planet…[and] we will be competing for the championship,” he said.

Rankin added that he hopes to bring the event to Cayman next year.
“I have had very serious conversations with the promoter to bring this event to our shores next year for all to see and cheer on their local team.”
The race will begin this Sunday at 10am.
