Official funeral announced for former vestryman AJ Miller

Former vestryman Arley James ‘A.J.’ Miller will lie in state at the House of Parliament on Thursday, 26 May, as part of a two-day official funeral, Government Information Services has announced.

The 92-year-old, described as a “political trailblazer” and Caymanian icon, passed away on Sunday, 8 May, at his Bodden Town home.

He was among Cayman’s few last surviving vestrymen.

Cayman Islands Flags will fly at half-mast at government buildings on Thursday and Friday as a mark of respect for Miller.

He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Justices and Vestry, Cayman’s original legislative entity, which evolved in 1959 with the first written Constitution into the Legislative Assembly, which has now transitioned to the House of Parliament.

Miller will lie in state at the House of Parliament on Thursday from 10am to 1pm to allow for Members of Parliament, government officials, family members and members of the public to pay their respects.

This will be followed by an official funeral service Friday at Savannah United Church with the viewing starting at noon.

The service will start at 1pm with interment at Pease Bay Cemetery, Bodden Town.

Meanwhile police have advised that Fort Street will be closed between 9am and 10:05am, and again between 2:45pm and 3:40pm on Thursday when Miller will be lying in state.

Police have asked motorists are asked to avoid the area during these times if possible, and exercise caution if travelling in the area otherwise.
