Looking back in time: ‘Long live our governor’

George Town of yesteryear. - Photo: Submitted by Ivan Burges

UPDATE: Thanks to friends sharing the image, we have now gleaned that the banner would have been referring to a visiting governor from Jamaica, as it was around the 1930s.

Everyone talks about the ‘good old days’ when times were simpler. Take a look at this picture from yesteryear and see if you can spot places, people and scenes you recognise.

George Town (date unknown)
This extraordinary image, submitted by Ivan Burges, is clearly from a date long ago. The car alone gives a hint of its age, not to mention the buildings captured in the shot.

Note the stilts under the structures, and what appears to be a thatch roof on the two-storey building in the background.

Do you know what year this was taken, and to which governor of the Cayman Islands the banner was referring? We’d be really interested to know more about it.
