Despite the rain on Sunday, yoga enthusiasts turned out in their numbers to mark, for the first time, International Yoga Day on Seven Mile Beach.
The event, organised by the Indian Cayman Community and Indian High Commission in Jamaica, featured a free gentle yoga zsana class with yoga teacher Mirabelle D’Cunha.
International Yoga Day is an official United Nations day and the theme this year was ‘Yoga for humanity’.
High Commissioner of India Masakui Rungsung, in a comment to the Cayman Compass on Sunday’s event, said he was very happy the local population of the Cayman Islands joined hands with the Indian community to mark the occasion.
“The turnout despite the rain was encouraging… the human condition is, by nature, stressful and full of an unprecedented anxiety. Yoga, with its emphasis on peace of mind, provides a remedy for the imbalances of daily life. For many, Yoga has become a practice to achieve liberation from the fear of failure, the fear of pain, and, ultimately, the fear of change,” he said.
Close to 100 attended the free event.
The event was held from 6am to 7am and was attended by adults and children.
Healthy drinks and light snacks, sponsored by Rocky Jewellers and Total Health Cayman Islands, were provided to attendees all of whom received an International Yoga Day t-shirt.
Free health check ups were also given by the team at Total Health at the event.
