Caymanian sprinter Kemar Hyman has withdrawn from the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, 2 Aug., after testing positive for COVID-19, just hours before he was scheduled to compete in the 100-metre event, the only race in which he was entered.
Though prior to his PCR test, the three-time Olympian had been in contact with several officials and teammates, each person connected to Hyman tested negative, according to Janet Sairsingh, who is the chef de mission of team Cayman.
“He is currently at the Games isolation hotel,” she said. “The rest of the team, athletes and officials are all doing well.”
Hyman, 32, said while his current situation isn’t pleasant, he has already accepted the circumstances and is trying to stay optimistic.
“COVID sucks,” he told the Cayman Compass. “But I’m happy I have no symptoms that are concerning or uncomfortable as of now. I’m taking it day by day and should be back in no time.”
Hyman is expected to be released from the Commonwealth Games isolation hotel within the next five days.
