Jamaica celebrates Diamond Jubilee: 60 years of independence

On Sunday, 5 Aug. 1962 at 11:59pm, the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, went dark for one minute, with only the flagpole highlighted.

The Union Jack was lowered, symbolising the end of the British rule over Jamaica, and the island’s new flag of black, green and gold was hoisted to the sound of jubilant cheers and fireworks signalling the birth of a new nation. The national anthem – ‘Jamaica, Land We Love’ – rang out proudly, as the island officially became independent on 6 Aug.

Now, 60 years later, Jamaica is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in style. Events are already under way there, leading up to the Saturday anniversary date. There have been concerts and float parades, featuring a large roster of legendary artists. The Grand Gala on Saturday at the National Stadium includes presenting Derrick Morgan and Sanchez with the Music Icon Award; performances from the likes of Beenie Man, Barrington Levy and Tessanne Chin; fireworks; and a drone show. There will also be street dances islandwide.

General Degree will be performing at the Lions Centre on Friday, 5 Aug.

With such a large Jamaican contingent living in Cayman (not to mention the historical ties between the islands), it is unsurprising that there are plans to celebrate this milestone anniversary at local venues. In the past, people like Simon Brown have appreciated the taste of home in Cayman that such events bring.

“Since I have been here I have looked forward to this time because I have the opportunity to have food that I would have in Jamaica. I look forward to the mannish water and ‘chocolate tea’, especially because those were dishes I would have on special occasions [there]. Being here, I don’t always get them, so the celebrations allow me to get that piece of home,” Brown said.
