Police have returned kiteboarding equipment worth about $30,000 to its owner after finding the gear in bushes in East End nearly six weeks after it was stolen in West Bay.
The equipment was taken from a trailer at Kitesurf Cayman on Barkers Beach on 20 June.
Among the gear stolen from the kitesurfing school were 20 kites, 10 boards, 20 harnesses and at least eight helmets. Some of the equipment belonged to Wind4Future, a charity that provides free kiteboarding instruction to Caymanian teens.
Police, in a statement issued today, 9 Aug., said the RCIPS received a report of a large blue bag found in the bushes by a new development on Farm Road, East End on Thursday, 4 Aug.
“The RCIPS K9 Unit was dispatched and a search conducted of the area, which resulted in the recovery of a number of bags containing kite boarding equipment,” police said.
The equipment matched the description of the items stolen from Kitesurf Cayman, whose owner, Jhon Mara, confirmed to police the following day that it was the missing gear.
Almost all of the stolen equipment was recovered, apart from one kiteboard and six helmets, police said.
Police are asking anyone who may have information about the outstanding stolen equipment to contact the Bodden Town Police Station on 947-2220.
