Sprinters Jamar Ellis and Olympian Kemar Hyman are heading to The Bahamas for the 2022 North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships, being held from 19-21 Aug.

The pair will be competing for Cayman at the Bahama Sports Complex in Freeport, accompanied by head coach Kenrick Williams. Both athletes are scheduled to run the 100 metres.

For Ellis, 17, the NACAC Championships will be the first time he represents Cayman nationally apart from the CARIFTA Games.

“It feels great,” Ellis told the Cayman Compass. “I’m happy to be getting this experience at such a young age. I’m going there to get a personal best… I just need to remember everything coach taught me.”

Hyman, 32, was scheduled to compete at the Commonwealth Games earlier this month but was forced to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19.

Now, just over two weeks later, the national record holder for the 100m dash will have another opportunity to wear Cayman’s colours on the track.

“It was very unfortunate that I didn’t get to compete at the Commonwealth Games, but fast forwarding, I am very optimistic about the NACAC Championships,” Hyman said. “We all know that I am recovering from COVID, so we’ll see what I still have in the tank.”

Hyman added, “I really do think I have a shot at making the finals and, obviously, from the finals we will see what happens.”

This will be the final meet for both athletes this season, according to Williams.
