Culture at the Cinema: ‘Straight Line Crazy’

Ralph Fiennes stars as Robert Moses, once one of the most powerful men in New York.

It was nearly a full house at Camana Bay Cinema for the August Culture at the Cinema offering of ‘Prima Facie’, starring Jodie Comer.

Local audience members raved about the production, saying that Jodie Comer was a “amazing, in a very powerful performance”.

Hopefully, theatre lovers will now turn out for the screening of ‘Straight Line Crazy’, starring Ralph Fiennes, scheduled for Saturday, 17 Sept. Written by David Hare and directed by Nicholas Hytner, it is a blazing account of the powerful man in New York, a master manipulator whose legacy changed the city forever.

The play was staged in the Bridge Theatre in London, and recorded live for viewing on the big screen.

Plot

For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors.

Faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become, will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction?
