Man arrested over fake $100 note

Police arrested a man Tuesday on suspicion of attempting to pass a counterfeit CI$100 bill and on drug offences.

According to an RCIPS statement, officers responded to a report that the man had attempted to use a counterfeit CI $100 note at a business in Cayman Brac on two separate occasions.

The officers later located the man and arrested him on suspicion “of uttering a forged note”.

Officers searched the suspect’s residence, where they found a quantity of ganja, as well as cocaine utensils. He was further arrested on suspicion of possession and consumption of ganja, consumption of cocaine and possession of a drug utensil.

He was granted bail as investigations continue.

Police have been investigating reports of other counterfeit notes being passed.

Since June 2022, five such reports have been received, with one incident taking place in Cayman Brac and the other four in Grand Cayman.

At least four of the forged $100 notes in these recent cases have the serial number D/1 292395, the same serial number as seen on previous counterfeit $100 notes.

The Financial Crime Investigation Unit is advising anyone who receives a counterfeit note, or suspects one to be counterfeit, to make note of the description of the person passing the note, as well as that of any companions who may be with them. They advise recipients of a suspected fake note not to return the note to the passer if possible.

“Instead, initial and date the white border of the note, then tag the note with a copy of the transaction receipt and call the police,” the FCIU said.
