Cayman’s rising golf star Aaron Jarvis gets another shot to test his skills against an elite field this week when he travels to Bermuda for the four-day PGA Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Jarvis, 19, won’t face the same pressures or quite the same quality of field at the Port Royal Golf Course as he did at the US Masters and the UK’s Open Championship. But he will line up against some high quality professionals, including former US Open Champion Lucas Glover, former Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald and charismatic former major winner Jon Daly.
Tournament organisers offered Jarvis, who made history as the first person from Cayman to compete in a major championships this year, one of its sponsor’s exemptions to compete at the event.
Jarvis’ debut in Bermuda marks his third PGA tour start, and first outside of a major championship.
He won the chance to compete in both the US Masters and the 150th Open Championship following his victory at the 2022 Latin America Amateur Championships in January. He performed admirably on both occasions, making history once more as he made the cut at the Open in Scotland.
Danielle Baiunco, Director of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, said: “With two globally recognised golf tournaments on his 2022 calendar and an impressive reputation as an upcoming amateur, Aaron attracted our attention back in May.
“Five months later, we were excited to reach out to Aaron and offer him a sponsors exemption into the field for the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. This year, our focus has been on giving an opportunity to young and successful players who have worked hard and have an eye on the future.
“We look forward to welcoming Aaron to Bermuda and we wish him every success.”
Jarvis said he was looking forward to the tournament at the scenic ocean-side course.
“It’s great to be representing Cayman and Caribbean golf and to show the young kids out there that anything is possible. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship will take place in Bermuda from October 27-30 and will be televised on the GOLF Channel.
