Veterans, politicians and members of the public in Cayman and around the world will gather on Sunday to remember those who lost their lives in the line of military duty.
In Cayman, Remembrance Day ceremonies will take place on Sunday, 13 Nov., followed by a public holiday on Monday, 14 Nov.
The ceremonies, which will include the traditional annual parade for the first time since 2019, will also honour Cayman’s surviving veterans.
The Grand Cayman ceremony will be held at the Cenotaph, outside Elmslie Memorial United Church in George Town. The ceremony will be streamed live on CIGTV channels.
On Cayman Brac, a ceremony will take place in front of the War Memorial Cenotaph in Stake Bay.
Both ceremonies will include the laying of poppy wreaths in memory of the fallen.
Attendees are encouraged to wear poppies during the ceremonies.
Following World War I, the poppy was chosen as a token of remembrance for everyone who suffered the tragedy of war.
The events are open to the public and will start at 10:45am sharp.
Two minutes of silence will be observed at 11am. The time symbolises the date of the end of World War I on 11 Nov. 1918.
The first time the two-minute silence was observed in the UK was on 11 Nov. 1919, one year after the war ended, when King George V asked the public to observe a silence at 11am.
He made the request so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”.
Attendees and participants at the ceremonies in Cayman on Sunday are asked to be assembled and seated by 10:30am.
Road closures in George Town will be in place during the ceremony to facilitate the parade.
