The inaugural Cayman Islands Open Badminton Championship wrapped up on Sunday, 27 Nov., with several players emerging with silverware from their respective divisions.
The championship, held at the Clifton Hunter High School gymnasium, featured dozens of athletes across five divisions.
“The event was well supported locally,” Don Calloo, president of the Cayman Islands Badminton Club told the Compass.
Garron Palmer and Claire Hughes finished on top in the men’s and women’s singles divisions, respectively. In doubles, Calloo and Palmer took the victory for the men, while Lolita Montemayor and Anna Ruby Bugarin won for the women.
Closing the competition was the mixed doubles, where Hughes earned another trophy with the help of teammate Caston Powery.

According to Calloo, the open badminton championship will be an annual tournament, adding he hopes local talent can soon begin to gain international recognition.
“[We] can only grow from this 2022 championship experience,” he said.
“The level of play displayed was definitely at or about international standard. Cayman Islands Badminton Association is an associated member of the World Badminton Federation and therefore falls within the Pan American region. Cayman is now ready to compete within the PANAM region and take up its rightful place as a worthy competitor.”
