Among the many events celebrating men and boys during November, the Sunrise Community Church hosted a competition which focused on fellowship and role modelling through friendly softball and frisbee games.

November was Men’s Health Awareness Month, with International Men’s Day on 19 Nov.

Speaking with the Cayman Compass during the event, held Saturday, 26 Nov., at the Field of Dreams, Adam Gordon, one of the organisers, said sports have always been a good way to help many men who face difficulties.

“It’s so important because, especially during the pandemic, I saw so many of my friends struggling,” Gordon said.

“We sometimes struggle to make these personal connections with other men, we just don’t open up to each other that much. Times like this, good-hearted fun, where we can get out together and have some laughs… playing some ball and eating tacos. It’s all for a good purpose.”

Several kids were also on hand for the Sunrise Community Church event.

Sunrise churchgoers and other members of the community, including several young boys, participated on the day.

“Around 30 men attended the event,” he said. “Some of our kids are here, as young as 8 years old, so they can also see what good role models look like.”

Gordon also spoke of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

“We just like to model a good healthy environment for kids, [showing them you can play] sports without any alcohol or things that media portrays that you need to have a good time.”
