The Cayman Islands will be featured in the World Rugby Youth Unstoppables short documentary series in the coming months.
The series highlights ‘remarkable’ young women around the globe whose ‘unstoppable’ nature has empowered them to break through barriers and flourish both on and off the pitch through playing rugby and through the support of their team.
Under-18 player Micah Leon was selected to be the face of Cayman for the World Rugby initiative, which selected only six other countries for the year.
Cameras followed Leon around throughout the day on Saturday, 28 Jan., where she trained and played at the Sound South Rugby Club, as well as at her home in Savannah.
“Today has been a wonderful experience,” Leon told the Cayman Compass. “I think it’s an absolutely big step for Cayman Rugby because now we have the attention of everyone.”
Leon, who has been playing rugby under the guidance of Mercedes Foy since last year, said her ‘acting skills’ were put to the test, but the camera crew made it all better.
“They were super nice,” she said. “They explained to me what was happening. I don’t keep a fierce face for a very long time, so it was good to practise those skills.”
Awesome Productions Ltd., a local company headed by Badir Awe, got the job to film the Cayman edition for World Rugby.
Speaking with the Compass, Awe said he was happy to have been selected to capture the documentary that could be seen by thousands.
“This is why I love what I do,” he said. “I get to experience a lot of things, I got to learn about women’s rugby which isn’t normally something I would do, so I’m happy to have gotten a gig.”
