Boxer Alec Lopez lived up to his potential at a tournament in the Bahamas this past weekend, thanks to his fast hands and slick footwork.
Lopez, 17, nicknamed ‘fearless’ by Floyd Trumpet, head boxing coach at the Performance Lab, where he trains, won a unanimous decision over Nassau’s Jeriya Francois at the the second annual Wellington ‘Sonny Boy’ Rahming and Leonard ‘Boston Blackie’ Miller Memorial Boxing Championships on Saturday, 4 March.
Lopez dominated all three rounds, at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium, to earn the nod from the judges and Trumpet, who told the Cayman Compass that he was pleased with his athlete’s effort.
“In any fight that I have coached, I am never satisfied 100% because there is always room for improvement, but I am glad to see where Alec is at,” Trumpet said. “He performed well, working his jab from the first bell to the last.”
It was the first time in two years that the now 2-1 boxer has competed in a match.
Trumpet, who welcomed Lopez to the sport back in 2019, said his passion for boxing has never been better despite the extended hiatus from competition.
“Alec is hungry to be a successful boxer,” he said. “He had a lot of disappointment last year that messed with his [frame of mind], but we are back on track now.
“He wants to go to the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games and not just go there, but he wants to medal. He is a real student of the game.”
Trumpet hopes to have Lopez compete several more times this year.
He thanked the Cayman Islands Boxing Association for their contribution towards the trip to the Bahamas, noting that CIBA president Alva Suckoo gave them “the go ahead to represent the country”.
